England 1900
Peter and his newly wed wife, Georgia, ask Peter’s father, Arthur, to tell them of his time in America during their Civil War. He appears to show reluctance but his wife Millie says, “Arthur, I think they should know all about it.”
Before he relates his experiences, he surprises both Peter and Georgia by saying to them, “You’ll have to make your own judgment at the end.”
Arthur’s story starts when he arrives in New York in August 1862 as a military attaché for the British Government just in time to become involved in the battle of Antietam. He sees this battle and others up to Gettysburg, and relates them through the eyes of a professional English Royal Artillery officer.
This is not just another American Civil War story but one that shows the depth of feeling between the sides from the perspective of an Englishman who meets legendary Civil War characters and becomes an accidental participant in the incredible conflict.
